I would like for you to prove, beyond the shadow of any doubt direct mail is still king!
Here's what you do. Let's say you have sold 6,000 copies of your latest e-book. And, for arguments sake, you have already captured their e-mail addresses AND regular old snail mail addresses. Out of the 6,000 people, you discover that 4,000 of them are US residents. So you take 2,000 of the buyer names and you create a sales letter for your latest product. The first group of 2,000 are going to receive the e-mail version of the sales letter. The other 2,000 are going to receive a real, paper and ink version of the sales letter.
Both the e-mail version and the regular mail version are the same letter. Just that one is going to be sent via e-mail one time, the other, the regular version will be sent one time too via regular mail.
You decide to give the letters 3 weeks to "work" their magic.
At the end of 3 weeks you are going to tally up the results.
Here is what to expect. The e-mail version, because of al the spam filters, blockers and the fact that the recipient may receive 30 e-mails that day results in 25 sales.
The regular "paper and ink" version results in 250 sales or roughly 10 times the amount of responses than that of the e-mail version.
Now, if you realized that direct mail and e-mail might require different copy - you might be able to squeeze out 300 sales from the regular version if, you decided to "beef up" your sales letter and make it more "direct mail friendly".
These results may vary but, this is what some of the smartest direct mail minds in the world are saying ... that direct mail beats traditional "online" marketing by a factor of...

No kidding! But just like everything else, your results depend on a lot of things. Like, if those original 4000 people were satisfied with your original product or not - and - how related your second "follow on" product was to the original subject matter.
At any rate, I urge you to try the "litmus" test to judge the results yourself. I think you will find results in accordance with the brightest marketing minds in the world!
